Virtual Competition Rules
POWYS DRAGONS VIRTUAL COMPETITION RULES
* Multiple certified judges will be scoring each video, removing any chance of suspected bias. Competitors will receive a score out of 10 from each judge. The totals will then be combined to give a final score. All judges will be willing to offer feedback if requested via the Powys Dragons email address: [email protected] *
3-5 YEAR OLD EVENTS
3-5-year-old competitors are allowed help from siblings, parents, or guardians when performing their Kata, they are also allowed to have markings on the floor to help guide them through their performance. See Sensei Emma’s KB Cubs Elbow Kata or H Form videos to give ideas for the markings they can use, where to place them and any moves they are stuck on.
6+ YEAR OLD EVENTS
Traditional Kata
Traditional Kata is one of the forms recognised on the Powys Dragons syllabus, they are judged based on technique, attitude, and if the Kata has been performed correctly.
Elbow Kata
Elbow Kata videos have been recorded and performed by Sensei Emma the same as we would teach it in class (we perform it mirrored to make it easier for the students to follow along and learn).
The students must at least reach these moves in order to compete in the relevant events:
White-Yellow belts: 1 - 4
Orange belts: 1 - 6
Red belts:1 - 9
Purple and above: FULL KATA
HIGHER BELTS PERFORMING THE KATA
As higher belts (blue belt and above) we are looking for you to be varying the timings of the Kata, using deep/exaggerated stances, and an outstanding attitude. Footwork MUST be excellent, including positions and directions of foot placement.
H-Form
H-Form videos have been recorded and performed by Sensei Emma the same as we would teach it in class (we perform it mirrored to make it easier for the students to follow along and learn).
The students must be able to at least reach these moves in order to compete in the relevant events:

Circle of The Tiger
Circle of The Tiger videos have been recorded and performed by Sensei Emma the same as we would teach it in class (we perform it mirrored to make it easier for the students to follow along and learn).
The students must be able to at least complete these moves in order to compete in the events:
White-Blue belts: 1 - 8
Green belts: 1 - Takedown
Brown belts and above: FULL KATA
BROWN 3rd DAN AND ABOVE PERFORMING THE KATA
As Brown 3rd Dan and black belts we are looking for you to be varying the timings of the Kata, using deep/exaggerated stances, and an outstanding attitude. Footwork MUST be excellent, including positions and directions of foot placement.
Open/Creative Kata
Open/Creative Kata gives students and instructors the opportunity to be able to explore the possibilities of creating their own Kata or having the independence of finding another Kata online and teaching it to themselves.
This will be getting judged based on creativity, technique, attitude and difficulty of moves, throughout the performance. The Kata must flow (for inspiration look at as many Katas as you like as well as the ones you already know) and the moves must be relevant to the previous move. Katas are a movement sequence which shows a story relevant to its name, so be creative with the name and its concept.
Traditional Weapons Kata
Traditional Weapons Kata (TWK) is either one of the recognised Powys Dragons Katas (see above for what we are looking for in regard to the basic Kata and where they should reach) with the addition of an approved weapon (see end of rules for a list). Alternatively, they can use Bo Kata.
Bo Kata will need to be performed to at least the following levels in order to enter (previous levels listed will be relevant for other kata’s):
White - Blue belts: 1 - 11
Green belts: 1 - 21
Brown belts and above: FULL KATA
Weapons Kata is judged based on technique, attitude, correct moves, their control of the weapon, and how well the use the weapon in relation to the Kata.
Open/Creative Weapons Kata
Open/Creative Weapons Kata gives students and instructors the opportunity to be able to explore the possibilities of creating their own Kata or having the independence of finding another Kata online and teaching it to themselves. They must only use an approved weapon (see list at the end of the rules).
This will be judged based on creativity, technique, attitude, control of their weapon and difficulty of moves throughout the performance. The Kata must flow, and the weapon of choice must be relevant to the Kata performed. (For inspiration look at as many Katas as you like as well as the ones you already know) All moves must be relevant to the previous one. Katas are a movement sequence which shows a story relevant to its name, so be creative with the name and its concept.
What happens if you win?
Awards
Those who place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the events will receive medals, all other participants will receive certificates of participation.
Our 1st place winners for each event of the main competition will earn a ticket to the future KB Virtual competition.
IF YOU REACH THIS STAGE OF THE COMPETITION YOU MUST ONLY COMPETE WITH A KATA RELATIVE TO YOUR BELT LEVEL. I.E. HIGHER BELTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO ENTER CIRCLE OF THE TIGER OF BO KATA.
Competition Wear
All competitors MUST be wearing their full clean Gi (including belt), bare foot, with long hair tied back. Points will be deducted if presentability rules have not been followed.

Hiring and buying
We can hire out weapon sets at £5 each, however any weapons lost or damaged will be charged at £25 per piece. Collection/delivery will take place following social distancing rules. All weapons hired out will be cleaned with a disinfectant and sealed in a bag or wrap. They must be returned in the same condition.
We do recommend that competitors buy their own weapons, which can be delivered to your address for £8 delivery cost (this is the charge from the supplier!) Please click here for the catalogue and then complete the online order form requesting delivery to your home address (which must be supplied).
